Marlu Seychelles today makes public its by-catch records for the full year 2025 and the first quarter of 2026

Monthly monitoring shows by-catch averaged 1.8% in 2025 and 2.0% in the first quarter of 2026, with discards below 1% in every month recorded.
Marlu Seychelles today makes public its by-catch records for the full year 2025 and the first quarter of 2026. The figures come from the company’s monthly by-catch assessment, prepared by Marlu’s Quality Control team from the catch landed by its fleet.
Across 2025, the fleet landed 1.8 kg of non-target species for every 100 kg of target species. In January–March 2026 the ratio was 2.0 kg. In nine of the twelve months of 2025 the figure was at or below 3%, and the lowest month, June, recorded 0.5%.
Discards — fish returned to the sea — remained below 1% in every month of both periods. In nine of the twelve months of 2025, no discards were recorded at all.
Transparency is the reason we publish the full monthly series, not only the averages. The highest month was October 2025, when by-catch reached 7.1%. This was a seasonal effect, and additional training was given to our crews in response.
Monitoring is continuous. Every fishing trip is recorded in the vessel logbook, with catch logged as target and non target species. Quality Control uses these logbooks to calculate by-catch and discard levels month by month, and cross-checks the results against landing sheets.
Marlu Seychelles is currently working towards Friend of the Sea certification for its yellowfin tuna and swordfish.
“We believe responsible fishing has to be measured, not just claimed. Publishing our by-catch numbers month by month, including the months that were not our best, is how we hold ourselves accountable to our customers, to the authorities and to the people of Seychelles,” said Ilya Kazakov, Commercial Manager, Marlu Seychelles.
Marlu Seychelles will continue to publish its by-catch figures every year.
